H Brothers

Meet the 4 "H" brothers we have been working with!  We finished up our digraph unit but it is important for us to continue practicing our previously taught skills to become better readers!  Here is a fun technology activity we got to do during our tech integration block with Ms. Beverly.  This is an app called BOOM CARDS where you can play fun games practicing a specific skill.  Here we played 4 different games that incorporated both reading and spelling our H brother words!  The kids loved it!  I look forward to using this app in math in the near future!

Magic Number

We have been practicing skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.  One of our favorite games to practice this skill is called Magic Number!  Ask your kiddo all about it and play at home!

Let's Get Moving!

I love to think of games that are not only fun but that also get our bodies moving!  Here is a fun game we played where we practiced reading ng and nk words.  I call out a word and an action and the students had to do that action over to an apple that matched the word I called out.  You can do this with sight words and even math facts!  Super fun! We skipped, danced, hopped, crab walked, you name it, we did it!  Phew! How exhausting but fun!

Technology

We are lucky at CES to have access to so many different types of technology.  Here is an example of us using an app called Chatterpix to practice our reading skills in math!  We wrote our own spooky word problems then we created our spooky creatures and made them talk by reading and recording our word problems!

Here Ms. Beverly introduced us to a new sock puppet app!  We practiced reading and recording our words that followed the spelling pattern for the week.  Listening to the playback of our puppets was so much fun!

Fact Fluency - Doubles

Using cups and sticky notes is an easy and fun way to practice math facts.  Here, we used the above visual to help us understand the concept of "doubles."  Then we practiced our facts by writing them on the bottom of the cups.  The answers go on the sticky notes and the students have to match the fact on the cup with the correct sticky note.  You can mix up the placement of the sticky notes every few rounds!

We try to find as many fun and exciting ways to practice our sight words.  Sight words are words that do not follow phonetic rules and need to be memorized to increase reading fluency.  Here is a game called Roll and Read that can be used to practice and make it fun at the same time!

Reading Folders

Reading folders are a great way for students to practice reading at their level and improve their fluency which means to "read like we talk."The incentive chart is a great and easy way to make it fun! This reading time can also count towards your nightly required reading time!
Don't forget to record it and pass in your reading calendars!
